2026-04-13Listening to Scent: The Art of KODO Returns to Los Angeles this May

Following a sold-out series of workshops this past March, the Japan-U.S. KODO Initiative returns to Los Angeles this spring with a special one-day event: Listening to Scent - The Art of KODO Experience, to be held on May 14, 2026 at ALBION GARDEN in Abbot Kinney.

This upcoming gathering offers a renewed opportunity to experience KODO, the traditional Japanese Way of Incense, through a guided and immersive program designed for both new and returning participants.

A Continued Exploration of KODO

Rooted alongside the tea ceremony and flower arrangement, KODO is a contemplative practice in which participants “listen” to incense - engaging with fragrance through quiet focus, intention, and presence. Rather than simply smelling, KODO invites a deeper awareness of scent as a sensory and cultural experience.

Building on the momentum of March’s sold-out sessions across Los Angeles, this May program offers a more intimate, single-day format in a new setting.

Program Overview

The experience will unfold through a structured 70–80 minute workshop, including:

To complement the experience, the program environment will be enhanced through the use of BALMUDA speakers, contributing to a subtle and immersive atmosphere.

A Unique Setting: ALBION GARDEN

Set in the heart of Abbot Kinney, ALBION GARDEN offers a calm and thoughtfully designed environment that enhances the contemplative nature of KODO. The workshop will feature chair seating, making the experience accessible and comfortable for all participants.

Each ticket includes a complimentary beverage from the ALBION GARDEN Café, as well as a small souvenir gift of Japanese incense by Nippon Kodo.

Opportunities to experience KODO outside of Japan remain rare. Whether you are encountering this practice for the first time or continuing your exploration, Listening to Scent offers a moment of stillness, reflection, and sensory discovery in the midst of the city.
