“The Life Cycle of Shiretoko”

The Shiretoko Peninsula is located in Northern Japan on the Eastern end of the island of Hokkaido.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the southern most location that icebergs are seen. This is where they end their journey and they usually arrive in the peninsula around the end of January.
The nutrients that come along with the iceberg nourish the plankton and make the peninsula abundant with life.
This abundance of nutrition becomes an important source of food for the seals, sea mammals, sea eagles, and the other inhabitants living in the peninsula.
The salmon that swim in the ocean to stock up on the abundance of nutrition then swim up the river to become a food source for the animals living in the mountains, and as their carcasses are left on the ground, they help the Shiretoko forests to become plentiful.
The circle of life which involves the mountains, the ocean, and the cycle of nutrients is what continues to increase the value of Shiretoko.
