This month’s temple … Ryoanji

Ryoanji was built by General Hosokawa Katsumoto in 1450 in the province of Kyoto. Ryoanji is famous for the garden that is within the temple grounds. The Sekitei rock garden is only 25 meters wide and 10 meters long and filled with white sand that has lines raked into it daily. The garden contains 15 rocks of varying shapes and size.

Even though the garden is very simple, it has a seriousness and beauty that allows people to feel its deep sincerity.

Although there are 15 total rocks in the garden, mysteriously, 1 of the rocks is always hidden by another. Because of the placement of the rocks, there seems to be only 14 rocks from any angle that you view the garden.
Ryoanji is also listed as a world heritage site.
