This month’s temple – Toshodaiji
Toshodaiji is a temple which was built in the year 759 by the famous Chinese priest Ganjin in the city of Nara.
Ganjin finally arrived in Japan in the year 753 after 6 attempts of sailing across the sea. This was 12 long years after the time that he first decided that he wanted to travel to Japan.
Toshodaiji has a large Japanese garden that houses national treasures such as the Golden Hall, and lecture room where you can see the rooms exactly as they were when the temple was built.
The Golden Hall is a valuable building because it is the only gold building from the Nara period that is left in Japan.
Toshodaiji became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989.
